The formulas
Is the keratin treatment formaldehyde-free?
Yes. None of our formulas list formaldehyde as an ingredient, and they contain no added parabens. Heat styling can still produce vapour, so always follow the instructions and work in a well-ventilated area.
Is the original Brasil Cacau Keratin still available?
Yes, but not for much longer. The classic formula is in its final run and we’re not reordering: shop the last of it in sizes 20–90ml while stock lasts. Its successor, Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia, gives the same sleek result with a gentler, lower-fume application.
What’s the difference between the three formulas?
Our formulas don’t all work in exactly the same way, so use the instructions supplied with the kit you choose rather than applying one method to every treatment.
- KHT Smoothing System: designed to reduce frizz and smooth the hair while retaining more natural movement or definition.
- Brasil Cacau Keratin: our traditional heat-bonded thermal treatment, designed for a straighter finish. It produces the strongest fumes of the three.
- Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia: a longer-processing, lower-fume treatment designed for a straighter finish.
All three are designed to reduce frizz and leave hair feeling smoother, softer and more manageable. Processing times, temperatures and straightener passes vary by formula and hair type.
What results can I expect with the KHT Smoothing System?
Once applied, the KHT Smoothing System significantly reduces frizz and leaves hair feeling soft, with shine. You can opt for:
- Smooth & relaxed result: straighten your hair with up to 6 passes. You can still get straight hair easily later with a few passes of a straightener, in much less time than without the treatment.
- Smooth & straight result: straighten your hair with up to 10 passes.
Can I keep my curls, or will it be dead straight?
Your curl pattern will usually relax, so it may not be exactly the same as it was before treatment. The KHT Smoothing System is designed for customers who want to reduce frizz while retaining more movement or definition, while the Brasil Cacau options are aimed at a straighter finish. Follow the formula-specific instructions and pass counts for the result you want.
Is it a permanent treatment?
We’d class the results as semi-permanent rather than permanent. They gradually fade as the hair is washed and grows out. Longevity varies by formula, hair type, application and aftercare, with many customers treating again at around 3 to 4 months.
Is it vegan and cruelty-free?
We don’t claim that our formulas are certified vegan. Our suppliers describe the formulas as cruelty-free.
Is this like a salon treatment?
Yes, these are professional formulas also used in salons. We’ve selected formulas designed to reduce common concerns such as colour shift, irritation and short-lived results, but every head of hair is different. Results depend on your hair type, its condition and following the formula-specific instructions closely.
Is a keratin treatment the same as a relaxer?
No. Traditional relaxers permanently change the hair’s internal bonds. Our range includes different smoothing methods: Brasil Cacau Keratin uses a heat-bonding process, while KHT Smoothing System and Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia use longer processing steps before heat styling. They’re designed to smooth and relax the hair rather than being described as traditional permanent relaxers, and the results gradually fade over time.
Will keratin damage my hair?
Any treatment involving high heat or chemical processing can place stress on hair, especially if it’s already fragile or over-processed. Our formulas are designed to smooth the hair and improve how it feels and looks when the instructions, temperature guidance and processing times are followed. If your hair is severely damaged, do a strand test first and contact us before treating the full head.
Doing the treatment
Can I do this treatment myself?
Yes! We’ve designed these kits so you can perform the treatment yourself. If you’re comfortable parting your hair and using a hair straightener, you can do this. The instructions in each kit are detailed and step-by-step, and there’s a full video guide. Having someone assist will speed up the process, especially the back sections.
How long does the treatment take to apply?
Time varies depending on the formula, whether you’re doing it yourself, and the length and thickness of your hair. As a general rule, allow between 1 and 4 hours. The longest part is usually working in small sections, applying the treatment and straightening each section as directed. Processing times and pass counts differ between formulas, so follow the instructions supplied with your kit.
Where should I perform the treatment?
Use a well-ventilated room or a sheltered outdoor area. Avoid positioning yourself where wind or a fan can push vapour towards your eyes or mouth, and follow all of the safety guidance supplied with your formula.
Does the treatment produce fumes?
Heat styling can produce fumes or vapour even though formaldehyde isn’t listed as an ingredient. Brasil Cacau Keratin produces the strongest fumes, while Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia and the KHT Smoothing System are designed to produce less. Always perform the treatment in a well-ventilated area and follow the instructions supplied with your kit.
Do I have to leave the treatment in overnight?
No. Follow the timing for your chosen formula and don’t leave it on longer than directed. The traditional Brasil Cacau Keratin process is completed through heat styling, while KHT Smoothing System and Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia include a longer processing stage of around 50 to 60 minutes before the later steps. None of the formulas should be left in overnight.
Why is a hair straightener so important?
Heat is an important activation and finishing step, but the correct temperature and number of passes depend on the formula and the condition of your hair. Bleached or damaged hair needs lower-temperature guidance, so follow the instructions supplied with your kit rather than using the highest setting automatically.
My straightener doesn’t reach 230 degrees, can I still do the treatment?
Usually, yes. The required temperature varies by formula and hair condition, and lower temperatures are specifically recommended for bleached or damaged hair. Check the temperature and pass-count table in your kit instructions; contact us before starting if your straightener can’t reach the minimum listed for your treatment.
My hair dryer doesn’t have a cool setting, is that OK?
Warming the hair a little is generally fine where the instructions call for cool drying. Hold the dryer at a distance and keep it moving so one area doesn’t become too hot, and follow the drying step supplied with your specific formula.
How long does the keratin stay in before rinsing?
That depends on the formula. Brasil Cacau Keratin uses a traditional heat-bonding process, while KHT Smoothing System and Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia include a longer processing stage before heat styling and rinsing. Follow the timing in your kit instructions exactly rather than using the process from a different formula.
Can I perform the treatment while pregnant?
There has been no clinical testing on whether the treatment is safe or unsafe during pregnancy. As a precaution, the manufacturer advises against using it while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Your hair
Is it suitable for coloured, blonde, highlighted, damaged or bleached hair?
Damaged or bleached hair: the formulas can be suitable with adjusted instructions, including lower straightener temperatures. Several of the customers in our testimonials have bleached hair. If your hair is severely compromised, contact us and perform a strand test before treating the full head.
Coloured hair: yes. The treatments are designed to smooth and seal the hair surface, which may help reduce colour fade. As a precaution the manufacturer recommends waiting 2 weeks after a fresh dye or bleach so the colour settles.
Blonde or highlighted hair: the formulas can be suitable with adjusted temperature guidance. Wait 2 weeks after fresh highlights and perform a strand test first if the hair is fragile.
Should I colour my hair before or after the treatment?
Colour first, then treat. Applying a smoothing treatment after colouring may help reduce fade. If you want to colour after a treatment, wait a minimum of 2 weeks so the treatment has settled. Colouring too soon may reduce the treatment’s longevity or affect how the dye applies, so if in doubt, check with your dye supplier.
Is keratin good for curly hair?
Depending on your hair type and how curly your strands are, there’s no promise of a completely straight finish. The treatments are designed to relax and smooth curls and reduce frizz, but the amount of change varies from person to person.
Will it work on very thick, coarse or tightly curled hair?
It can, but we’ve seen mixed results on very thick, coarse, tightly curled or virgin hair, and we can’t guarantee a completely straight finish. Curl-pattern labels such as 2B are useful, but thickness, coarseness, condition and previous chemical treatments also affect the result.
For Brasil Cacau Nanoplastia, the supplied guidance recommends 6–15 straightener passes for fine-to-medium hair and 10–15 passes for medium-to-coarse or virgin hair. Hair without previous chemical treatments may require more passes to be effective.
Use the higher end of the temperature and pass range only where the instructions for your formula and hair condition allow it. Never exceed the supplied temperature guidance. If you’re unsure, contact us before starting, and we’d genuinely appreciate your feedback about the result on your hair type.
Is keratin good for dry hair?
Our formulas are designed to smooth the hair surface and leave dry hair feeling softer and more manageable. Results and longevity vary by formula, hair condition and aftercare. Because the treatments use different processing methods, follow the timing and temperature guidance supplied with the specific kit you choose.
Is keratin good for thin hair?
It can help reduce frizz and make thin hair feel smoother and more manageable, but fine or fragile hair needs gentler temperature guidance. If your hair is very sparse, severely damaged or prone to breakage, contact us before treating and perform a strand test first.
Is keratin good for grey hair?
Yes. As we age the scalp produces less natural oil, which can leave grey hair dull and wiry. A keratin treatment dramatically reduces that coarse feeling, softens the hair and adds shine, without the hassle of a salon visit.
Can I do a keratin treatment on permed hair?
Not straight away. A perm chemically alters the hair, and its condition afterwards varies considerably. Wait until the hair has recovered, check the guidance for your chosen formula, and contact us before proceeding. A strand test is essential before treating the full head.
Can it be done on chemically-treated, relaxed or straightened hair?
Often, yes, but a smoothing treatment can’t reverse damage caused by earlier chemical processing. The formulas are designed to improve smoothness, shine and manageability. Wait at least two weeks between chemical treatments, use the temperature guidance for your hair type, and perform a strand test if your hair is compromised.
Should I get a haircut before or after the treatment?
Cut after. If you already have split ends, any imperfections or over-processed ends will be most visible after a treatment. Also, don’t over-saturate your hair with the keratin solution: a light coating goes a long way.
New growth: touch-up or full redo?
We generally recommend repeating the treatment from near the roots to the ends rather than spot-treating regrowth, following the application and timing instructions for your formula. Avoid over-processing fragile areas and contact us first if the condition of your lengths and regrowth differs significantly.
Kits & sizing
Which size kit will I need?
This differs for each person. Our How to DIY guide matches hair length to the optimal kit size. If your hair is thicker than average, go one size up: if your length matches a 50ml kit, choose the 75ml.
Why do the treatments come in measured, resealable pouches?
When we looked for the best way to supply the treatment we settled on sealed, measured pouches for a few reasons: they’re hygienic with no pollutants to disrupt the treatment, you can see exactly how much we supply, and the resealable spout cap means you don’t have to use the whole amount at once. Leftover product stores for your next treatment.
Why is there only 20ml of shampoo and conditioner in the kit?
The main ingredient in the kit is the keratin (Step 2). Step 1 shampoo and Step 3 conditioner are used like a normal hair wash, and very few people need more than 20ml of each per wash. Supplying 20ml means there’s more than enough, and it keeps the cost down so you don’t pay for product you won’t use.
I have leftover Step 2, what should I do with it?
Reseal the spout cap and store it for your next treatment. For example, if you purchased a 75ml kit and only used 60ml, you can buy a 50ml kit next time and top it up with your leftover 15ml.
Important: stick to the same formula. Leftover KHT Smoothing System pairs with a KHT Smoothing System kit, and leftover Brasil Cacau with a Brasil Cacau kit.
How long do I have to use the treatment after I receive it?
Our treatments have a best-before of 12 months from purchase. Keep the kit in a cool area away from direct sunlight.
Aftercare & lasting results
Does the treatment reduce frizz?
Absolutely, that’s one of its main functions, especially in hot and humid conditions. In some cases it won’t eliminate every last bit of frizz, but it majorly reduces it for excellent results.
How soon after the treatment can I wash my hair?
As soon as all the steps are completed, the treatment is finished and you can wash your hair as normal. We recommend not washing too frequently (once or more a day) as this can shorten how long the results last.
Do I need a special shampoo or conditioner to prolong the treatment?
You can use your own, but look for products that are sulphate-free. Sulphates can gradually reduce the treatment’s longevity. We also have suitable aftercare options in our store.
Can I swim with keratin-treated hair?
Yes, with some care. Chlorine and salt water will gradually fade any keratin treatment, so:
- Wait at least 48 hours (ideally a week) after the treatment before swimming.
- Wet your hair with fresh water before you get in, so it absorbs less chlorine or salt, and apply a leave-in conditioner or oil as a barrier. A fabric swim cap helps too.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water as soon as you’re out. Don’t let pool or beach water dry in your hair.
- Afterwards, use a deep conditioner or mask, detangle gently with a wide-toothed comb, and avoid hot tools for a few days.

Guarantee & returns
How does the 45-day money-back guarantee work?
If you’ve used one of our DIY kits and aren’t happy with the result, contact us within 45 days of the order date. A claim requires clear before-and-after photos taken in similar lighting, details about how you applied the treatment, and a kit size suited to your hair length. Eligible claims cover the kit cost; accessories and other expenses aren’t included, and unused kits from a multi-kit purchase must be returned.
This is a short summary only. Please read the full 45-day guarantee terms and photo requirements before applying, then email your claim from the address used for your order to care@keratinhairtreatments.com.au.
Can I return an unused or change-of-mind order?
Contact us within 14 days of receiving the order. Approved items must be returned in their original state within 30 days of receipt. The buyer pays return postage and a $7.50 restocking fee is deducted from the refund.
See the full returns terms for eligibility and instructions, or email care@keratinhairtreatments.com.au before posting anything back.
What if my order arrives incorrect or damaged?
Take a clear photo and contact us immediately at care@keratinhairtreatments.com.au. We’ll confirm the return instructions and arrange a replacement or refund as appropriate.
Shipping, from Brisbane to you
Where do you ship to?
We ship throughout Australia and to selected international destinations. Add your products to the cart and continue to checkout: if your country is available, the current postage options and price will be calculated for your address.
Who do you send orders with?
Most orders are sent with Australia Post. The services available for your address, including any express or international options, are shown with current pricing at checkout.
How long until I receive my order?
We aim to ship within 24 hours, same day when possible, on weekdays. Everything leaves from northern Brisbane.
Australia Post delivery estimates vary by destination and service. Add your address at checkout to see the current options and estimated delivery time. Carrier estimates aren’t guaranteed and may be affected by peak periods or remote-area delivery.
Do you offer express shipping?
Where Express Post is available for your address, it will appear as an upgrade at checkout with the current price and delivery estimate.
Can I pick up my order?
Pickup from our north Brisbane home office may be possible by appointment only, and available times vary. We recommend postage for convenience.
Will I be able to track my order?
Yes, we send a tracking number so you can follow your order’s progress. Tracking can take up to 24 hours to show its first update, so if nothing appears at first, check back later, and contact us if it still shows nothing.
Tracking says “attempted delivery” but no card was left?
Unfortunately Australia Post sometimes doesn’t attempt delivery or leave a card. The tracking usually shows which post office the parcel was taken to. Drop in or call that post office to see if your parcel is waiting for collection.
I’m outside Australia, can I order your kits?
Add a kit to your cart and continue to checkout. If your country can be selected, the available postage services and current price will be calculated for your address. If it isn’t listed, contact us and we’ll check whether shipping can be opened for your destination.
Check your local customs requirements before ordering. Our hair-treatment products generally use HS code 33059090. International delivery estimates don’t include customs processing time, and any tracking limitations will be shown with the selected service.
Payments, safe & simple
What payment methods do you accept?
All credit cards through our secure Stripe gateway, PayPal, and direct bank deposit. Card payments through Stripe are the quickest for us to confirm, which means your order ships sooner.
How does direct deposit work?
Select Direct Deposit at checkout and you’ll receive our bank details with your order confirmation. Banks with Osko transfer instantly; without Osko it can take 1 to 2 business days to clear. We dispatch your order as soon as the payment lands.
Do you have Afterpay or payment plans?
We haven’t partnered with a part-payment company, but we do offer PayPal Pay in 4: select it at checkout and, if PayPal approves you, your total is split into 4 payments, one at purchase and one every two weeks, with no interest or fees. Qualification is at PayPal’s discretion.
My order failed, how come?
Failed orders are usually a credit card error from your bank, most commonly the CVC (the number on the back of the card) not matching the bank’s records, or insufficient funds. You can simply attempt the order again.
My order failed but I’ve been charged?
When a card order fails, your bank may still show a pending payment on your statement. If the CVC was entered incorrectly the funds never reach us, and the pending charge typically disappears within 24 hours. You’re safe to place the order again, or wait until the pending payment clears first.
Everything else
Why do salons charge so much for a keratin treatment?
It’s not (usually) that salons overcharge. A full salon keratin kit can easily cost $1,000+, and they also carry rent, wages, tax and electricity. A treatment ties up a chair for 2 to 4 hours, which is time they can’t do other work, so they have to charge for it. We don’t carry those overheads, and we pass the savings on to you.
